The “Consumer Data Right” (CDR) is currently under consideration by the Australian Parliament. CDR will expand upon the current provisions of Australian Privacy Principle 12 in the Privacy Act which allows for individuals to access “personal information” about themselves. If passed by the Australian parliament, CDR will give businesses as well as individuals the right to access data held about them by businesses and will also allow for them to access information about a service provider’s products. The hope is that CDR will increase competition by enabling individuals and businesses to make more informed decisions about the goods and services which they use.
